Some of the tests in the Halstead-Reitan Battery have been
produced by other manufacturers. Only the tests sold by Reitan Neuropsychology Laboratories, Inc. are the same as those on which the original standardization and validation data were obtained.
The reader/purchaser should be aware that different versions of
the tests may produce scores that do not correspond with the standardization
data, and, at least in some instances, have been found to lead to incorrect
clinical conclusions.
Hundreds of papers have appeared in the literature which have
investigated various hypotheses relevant to interpretation of results obtained
with the tests in the Halstead-Reitan Batteries. The Halstead-Reitan Batteries
have been more extensively researched and validated than any other instruments
for assessing brain-behavior relationships.
A Brief Description of the Halstead-Reitan Neuropsychological
Test Batteries
The Halstead-Reitan Battery was developed as a battery rather
than as a series of individual tests. Therefore, each test in the Battery must
be administered properly to avoid invalidation of the overall results (Reitan &
Wolfson, 1993).
Psychologists are asked to:
-
evaluate brain-behavior relationships,
-
give an opinion about the presence of brain disease or damage,
-
plan rehabilitation programs, and
-
testify in court regarding their neuropsychological
evaluations.
Normative results and clinical interpretations based on the
original test results are important in meeting these responsibilities.
Three batteries of tests have been developed to evaluate the
brain-behavior functioning of individuals.
-
The adult battery, the Halstead-Reitan
Neuropsychological Test Battery for Adults is used with persons 15 years of
age and older.
-
The older children's battery, the Halstead-Reitan
Neuropsychological Test Battery for Children was designed for children aged 9
through 14 years and is essentially similar to the adult battery (Reitan &
Wolfson, 1992).
-
The younger children's battery, the Reitan-Indiana
Neuropsychological Test Battery for Children was designed for use with young
children aged 5 through 8 years.
The Neuropsychological Deficit Scale (NDS) for Adults gives
normative ranges for all variables in the Halstead-Reitan Battery. The
Neuropsychological Deficit Scale for Older Children and the Neuropsychological
Deficit Scale for Young Children were developed in 1987. (more info)
The use of level-of-performance scores, as indicated by
normative tables, is by itself inadequate to interpret results for individual
subjects. In fact, the Halstead-Reitan Batteries have been deliberately composed
to permit use of several methods of inference regarding brain-behavior
relationships. These methods and illustrations of individual interpretation are
noted in a number of publications.
